Biografie – Lars Leonhard

Biography – Lars Leonhard

Lars Leonhard was born in 1973 in Hilden, near Düsseldorf, Germany. From an early age, he discovered his passion for electronic music. Inspired by pioneering artists such as Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, and Klaus Schulze, he quickly developed a sense for sonic depth, rhythmic structure, and atmospheric sound design.

Since the early 1990s, Lars has been producing and composing his own music—initially experimental, later with a steadily refined artistic vision. Today, his style moves fluidly between ambient, dub techno, downtempo, and deep house—genres that he skillfully fuses into a distinctive and immersive sound. His compositions are characterized by flowing textures, intricate arrangements, and a meditative sonic language that is both introspective and cinematic.

He made his official debut in 2010 with the EP Infected, released on the netlabel Deepindub Records. This marked the beginning of a prolific career that has included releases on respected labels such as BineMusic, Ultimae Records, Synphaera Records, and Diametral Records. His discography features a wide range of EPs and full-length albums, earning him international recognition as a leading figure in the global ambient and dub techno scene.

A significant milestone in his career is his long-term collaboration with the U.S. space agency NASA. Since 2013, Lars has been composing music for scientific visualizations of space phenomena—such as solar flares, planetary motion, and cosmic simulations—captured by satellites and telescopes. More than 20 of these audiovisual works have been published on YouTube. His track Thunderbolt became a viral success, garnering over 9 million views to date.

In addition to his solo releases, Lars Leonhard has contributed to numerous international compilations. He is regarded as a versatile sound artist whose music is frequently featured in contexts ranging from audiovisual art and scientific media to electronic club culture.

With each new release, Lars Leonhard continues to evolve while staying true to his signature aesthetic. His music reflects a deep connection to space, time, and technology—a connection that transcends traditional genre boundaries and builds a bridge between human emotion, machine precision, and the vastness of the cosmos.
